The Kite Runner – Khaled Hossieni

This book is a modern day classic in my eyes.

In the first part of the book, we learn about two young boys – Amir and Hassan – who have been brought up together in the same house with the same people, but they go on to live completely different lives. When Amir wins the Kite Tournament, he believes that everything will be good with him and his father, but it could not last. When Hassan runs the kite for Amir, something happens to Hassan that will split the boys apart forever.

When the Russians invade Afghanistan, Amir and his father Baba flee to America, where they build up a life for themselves. Amir finds love and marries a fellow Afghan and all seems good until Baba dies from cancer. He and his new family stick together, but Amir couldn’t stay for long.

He leaves on a journey, as “a way to be good again” and he comes back with an unusual sovieneer.

This book is gold. It is a novel that will make you want to burst into tears and it really makes you think.

I give it *****
